Lifestyle is a person’s attitudes, interests, behaviors, and overall behavioral orientations. The word was first introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his 1930 book, The Case of Miss R. The concept was applied to individuals, but it is now commonly used to refer to the cultural systems or societies as a whole. The research into this concept has been ongoing ever since, which is why it is only natural for the field to include cross-cultural studies as part of its scope.

Cross-cultural research on the subject comes from different sources, including anthropology, sociology, communication theory, marketing studies, and so on. As mentioned before, the idea of the “lifestyle” comes from Adler’s original definition. From this foundation, experts came up with different interpretations for the word and created different categories that fall under each of the three main perspectives: individualistic, communal, or collectivist. Individualistic describes people who are self-sufficient, unlike those who belong to a group that looks out for the common good. Community oriented refers to those who share common values. Collectivists, meanwhile, believe that communities should be autonomous and do not need the guidance of other people.

A healthy lifestyle is all about trying to live your life according to your values, beliefs, and lifestyle preferences. Unfortunately, there are many people who try to live according to other people’s standards. Living an unhealthy life style, on the other hand, can have serious health consequences. According to recent studies, unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking, drinking, drug abuse, and obesity can contribute to a variety of serious health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
