The Slot is the position on a football team’s offense that is positioned directly in between the other wide receivers and the tight ends. They are often the team’s best blocking receivers and are vital on running plays such as sweeps, slants, and end-arounds. Slots are also used on passing plays and must be able to run routes that coordinate with the other receivers in order to confuse the defense. Because of their alignment and pre-snap motion, Slot receivers are often responsible for blocking nickelbacks, outside linebackers, and safetys.
A slot is a dynamic container that either waits for content (a passive slot) or calls out to a renderer for it (an active slot). A slot can contain any number of dynamic items, such as widgets or rich text, from a repository item or from a scenario. Scenarios work in conjunction with slots to deliver content and with renderers to specify how the contents of a slot are presented on a page.
