The first betting round is called the ante, which usually starts with one player putting up money. Then, players call or raise if they have a strong hand and want to move the pot into the next round.

A key difference between break-even beginner players and big-time winners is the way they think about the game. The former have an emotional attachment to their pocket hands and are more susceptible to sandbagging, while the latter view the game in a cold, detached, mathematical and logical manner that enables them to win at a higher clip.
